    Babies born to a Traveller parent (either the mother or father has to be a Traveller) between 14th October 2008-13th October 2009 and on the Island of Ireland will now be studied as part of the Birth Cohort study. Information on that study is here.

    The initial census in the Republic of Ireland was completed in December 2008.

    22 thematic and open focus group discussions on health issues have been held in the Republic of Ireland. In Northern Ireland, ethical approval for the focus groups is currently being sought.

Important chronological events

‘Our Geels’ - The All Ireland Traveller Health Study is a result of much hard work by many  people who attended various events organised to progress the Study and contributed enormously.  Following are some of the events that have led to the current stage of the Study:

  • Eastern Regional Health Authority - Thursday 11th September 2003
  • Midland Health Board - Tuesday 16thSeptember 2003

  • Northern Ireland Regional Consultation - Wednesday 24th September 2003

2. One Feedback on the Regional Consultations in December 2003 in Dublin

3. First proposed draft document circulated jointly by the IPH and the Department of Health and Children on the 16th of November 2003

4. Draft procurement option document produced jointly by the IPH and the DH&C in January 2004

5. Demographer contracted in November 2005 for Traveller Census

6. Census form designed by PaveePoint in November 2005 in conjunction with the Demographer

7. EU Procurement Document prepared and sent to tender in December 2005

8. Tender closed on the 17th of February 2006

9. Outcome of tender unsuccessful

10. Re-tendered on the 30th June 2006

11. Tender closed on the 8th August 2006

12. Contract awarded to UCD on

13. Minister launched the AITHS on the 10th of July 2007

14. Draft questionnaire put on the web by UCD on the 19th of February 2008

15. Training of PHC Co-ordinators/Assistant Co-ordinators on questionnaire and protocol by UCD on the 17th of April 2008

16. Training of PHC Co-ordinators/Assistant Co-ordinators on computer use by UCD on the 18th & 19th of June 2008

17. Consultation around cultural proofing the draft questionnaire with the Traveller Primary Health Care Workers in the Eastern Region by UCD on the 15th of July 2008
