Traveller Focus Week 2009
Traveller Pride
Traveller Pride
‘Pavees Whidden’ takes a hard look at the reality of drug misuse within the Traveller community through the telling of personal stories and is the first of its kind in Ireland. It is made by Travellers for Travellers. It tackles the issue head on by breaking the silence, looks at the signs of drug use and where to go for help. This DVD is essential viewing for all Travellers and Traveller organisations to enable them to tackle this issue before it gets worse. The DVD will officially be launched by Minister of State with responsibility for drugs, Mr John Curran.
This DVD is designed to be used as an educational tool for facilitators to raise awareness of the drugs issue and is accompanied by a facilitator’s booklet. It was made possible by funding from Bray Local Drugs Task Force and
was a joint venture between Pavee Point Travellers Centre and Bray Travellers Community Development Group.
Produced by Glasseye Productions
The launch will take place from 11.30am -2pm (with Light lunch served) in the Ashling Hotel, Parkgate Street.

The theme of Traveller Focus Week 2009 is Traveller Pride, and one of the events this year will be the very first Traveller Pride Awards.
The Awards will take place on the 8th December in Dublin’s Liberty Hall, and will celebrate Traveller achievements whilst highlighting some of the obstacles that exist for Travellers in Irish society. The ultimate aim is to instil pride, increase expectations and celebrate Travellers’ undoubted positive contribution to Irish life – and also the pride and determination one has to have in order to succeed as a Traveller.
There will be winners in six individual categories, from which one will be chosen to receive the overall Traveller Pride Award for 2009.
